Wellness Wednesday: Is It Wiser To Keep or Remove your Wisdom Teeth?

Wellness Wednesday:Wisdom teeth – Wise to keep or smarter to remove?

It has become a social norm in your late teenage years to early 20s to hear that you need to remove your wisdom teeth. However, not all people require having their wisdom teeth removed. This decision should be one which is unique to you based on the pros and cons of extracting or leaving the wisdom teeth.

Because of the changes in jaw sizes over the past few centuries, many people whose ancestors had enough room for their wisdom teeth find that they do not. To understand why this is occurring read “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration” by Dr. Weston Price (@westonaprice) and “The Dental Diet” by Dr. Steven Lin (@drstevenlin).

For some, removing their wisdom teeth is the safest choice. Impacted wisdom teeth can, in many cases, allow microbes to take up residence deep within the gum-lined area where the wisdom teeth are trapped. This may cause “pericoronitis” (severe infection and inflammation around the wisdom tooth). The most predictable way to manage this is to remove the wisdom teeth. In order to optimize healing after extraction (and avoid cavitation lesions!) we help patients optimize systemic health, treat the extraction site with ozone and erbium laser energy and then fill the hole with “L-PRF”, a concentration of your own immune cells and clotting factors. Not many dentists invest in technologies such as Erbium lasers, ozone generators and L-PRF systems. So make sure you know what you’re getting if you choose to take out your teeth!

If you can keep your wisdom teeth and ensure their health over time, good for you! There are many health benefits to keeping all of your natural healthy teeth. If you think about it, they are probably in your head for a reason!
