Toxic Tuesday: What If Root Canals Became Illegal?

Toxic Tuesday – What if……root canals became illegal? What would dentists do differently to help their patients avoid tooth pain and sensitivity?
I want to offer some information that you may not have heard. Almost all tooth pain that occurs after dental treatments such as fillings and crowns is avoidable. Unfortunately, because standard dental education does not cover all of the clinical nuances and technologies that are required to help reduce post-treatment sensitivity or pain, trusting patients continue to suffer.
Here is a common scenario: a health-conscious person tells their dentist, “I want my mercury fillings replaced with a less toxic material.” The dentist agrees to help the patient (and let’s pray that they are following the “SMART” or “PROTECT” protocols as defined by the @iaomt or @theiabdm, respectively). The fillings are replaced. However, when the numbness wears off the tooth (or teeth) that were previously not sensitive are now quite painful.
The patient returns to the dentist complaining of the pain. After ensuring that the bite is balanced the dentist tells the patient, “It looks like your tooth needs a root canal.” This begs the question: If the tooth had no pain before the procedure and it only started hurting after the procedure, would it not seem likely that something went wrong during the procedure? Additionally, given that a tooth is a living body part, if the problem with the filling or crown is fixed, wouldn’t the tooth pain resolve? I am here to say, “Yes! Tooth pain can be avoided!”
The most common reasons for post-treatment tooth pain are overheating of the tooth due to aggressive drilling and poor quality bonding techniques. The good news is there are techniques and technologies that help reduce these issues! Tune in tomorrow to learn how I ensure that teeth don’t hurt after being restored with biocompatible materials.
