Autoimmune Diseases and Root Canals – Learn the Connection!

One of the most common rebuttals to my posts where I share the science and my observations of how root canals can be toxic is, “There is no scientific evidence that supports the notion that root canals negatively impact people’s systemic health.” For those who strongly believe this, I encourage you to go PubMed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) and type in the PubMed ID #: 37373794.

This will take you to an article from The Journal of Clinical Medicine (June 2023) titled, “Root Canal Infection and its Impact on the Oral Cavity Microenvironment in the Context of Immune System Disorders in Selected Diseases: A Narrative Review”. The article shares in modern scientific terms what was formerly called the “Focal Infection Theory” which was proposed more than 100 years ago. The Focal Infection Theory was supposedly “disproven” in the 1940s and 1950s primarily after biased editorial articles were written in the Journal of the American Medical Association (see PMID: 33488729).

What I appreciate about today’s referenced article is its basis in sound scientific information. The introduction concludes with the sentence, “This literature review aimed to present the current state of knowledge in the field of tooth root canal infections and its impact on the oral cavity microenvironment in the context of disorders of the immune system in selected diseases.” Although the language of the article contains a scientific tone, it is easy for any person to understand the significance of their findings.

For those who are open minded and willing to humbly learn, I encourage you to read this article. If you are suffering from immune-mediated disease and have not found a cure, consider how your oral health may be connected. I further encourage you to share this article with your dental support team to help elevate their awareness of the “oral-systemic connection.”
