Blodgett Dental Care Embodies Humanistic Dentistry

Dentistry has become “green washed” with terms that are now meaningless. Practically every dental practice is using terms such as “holistic”, “biological”, “functional”, and “integrative” to capture clicks with their SEO. Unfortunately there is little regulation around what terms dentists use to describe their practices.

I am the only Certified Biological Dentist in the state of Oregon as determined by the International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine. I hold Board Certifications in Naturopathic Medical Dentistry and Integrative Biological Dental Medicine. These certifications required years of rigorous study and demonstrating my expertise through passing written tests, presenting my own studies, and being questioned by the gurus in the biological dental world. I would strongly attest that I have earned the right to refer to myself as a Biological Dentist. However, it turns out that any dentist can use this term regardless of training or demonstrating expertise.

This realization caused me to reflect on what makes Blodgett Dental Care so uniquely different. What category exists that best describes our approach to helping human beings with their oral health? Then it hit me! “Humanistic Dentistry”! Typically used when referring to an approach in psychology, the term “humanistic” refers to considering the emotions and feelings of people who are working on their psychological health. And that is what we do at BDC as we help patients with their oral health!

Today I will start using a new phrase as it relates to our approach to caring for humans and their oral health: “Humanistic Dentistry” – The approach to dentistry that emphasizes feelings and emotions of patients, the interpersonal connection between patient and care provider, and that honors the unique bio individuality of each patient in a holistic and integrative fashion.
