Toxic Tuesday | Blodgett Dental Care
At Blodgett Dental Care, we focus on the connection between oral health and whole-body wellness. Emerging research continues to support what biological dentistry has long recognized: that oral infection and breast cancer risk may be more closely connected than previously believed.
A recent study from Johns Hopkins Medicine shows that a common oral bacterium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, may contribute to breast cancer development and progression.
This bacterium, commonly linked to gum disease and root canal therapy, has been shown to travel from the mouth through the bloodstream and lymphatic system, settle in breast tissue, and promote DNA damage, inflammation, tumor growth, and cancer spread.
How Oral Infection Can Affect Breast Health
Researchers found that Fusobacterium nucleatum can alter how breast cells behave, particularly in individuals with genetic vulnerabilities such as BRCA1 mutations.
Once established outside the mouth, this bacterium may accelerate cancer progression by creating chronic inflammation and disrupting normal cellular function.
This research provides strong evidence that oral infections are not isolated to the mouth and that they may influence disease processes throughout the body. Read more about the study.
A Biological Dentistry Perspective
From a clinical standpoint, these findings align with what we see in practice. Of the hundreds of root canals removed and sent for DNA testing, nearly all test positive for Fusobacterium nucleatum. While research is ongoing, this highlights the importance of identifying and addressing chronic oral infections that continuously stimulate the immune system.
Prevention Starts With Oral Health
Breast cancer awareness is not only about early detection, but it’s also about reducing preventable inflammatory triggers. Oral health plays a critical role.
True prevention goes beyond brushing and flossing and includes:
- Treating gum disease
- Addressing tooth decay before infection develops
- Evaluating root canals and chronic dental inflammation
