A Whole-Body Approach to Biological Dentistry

Blodgett Dental Care honors your unique biological health and wellness using only biologically-compatible materials

What is Biological Dentistry?

Biological dentistry is an approach that differs from traditional dentistry in that traditional dentistry focuses primarily on treating symptoms while biological dentistry strives to optimize health systems. Biological dentistry considers more than just teeth, gums, and jawbones – it considers energetic interferences, gut health, nutritional absorption, biocompatibility, and many other whole health connections.

A biological approach to dentistry stems from the perspective that everything that happens in your mouth impacts every other part of your body. biological dentistry focuses on optimizing health so that states of disease never start.

Unlike conventional dentistry, if you have experienced common dental diseases or treatments, biological dentistry aims to remove all substances that are not in harmony with whole body health. Some of the most common dental materials used that are known to be toxic (mercury and nickel), while common dental treatments that may have a negative impact on health are mercury amalgam fillings, root canals, fluoride treatments, and titanium metal implants.

Removal of materials and teeth that present risk to your health and replacing them with biocompatible substances can be a positive way to bring your body’s health back to a state of balanced energy.

I travelled from LA to ensure that I was in this practice’s care! That is how strongly I feel about how they perform and the care that they take in their patients! The newest biological treatments were used and I felt so taken care of by Dr. Blodgett and his team. They not only came in on the weekend, but facetimed me personally multiple times prior and hand delivered meds to my hotel room! The biological surgery went perfectly as planned and I would recommend anyone and everyone to go to these guys! All around A+

I traveled from northern California for treatment and had a great biological dental experience with Dr. Blodgett and his entire team. His staff is extremely empathetic and kind, never dismissing my anxiety, and always doing their best to make sure I was comfortable.

In one visit I was able to have all my mercury fillings removed and replaced and a tooth extraction/implant. My implant is in the front of my mouth and the crown looks exactly like my other teeth. You’d never know it wasn’t a real tooth!

I wish this kind quality of care was more accessible. I’m looking forward to the way it will affect my whole-body-health moving forward. I’m very thankful for Dr. Blodgett and his wonderful biological dental team!

I recently had an exceptional experience at Blodgett Dental Care and wanted to share my thoughts. Initially, dental work wasn’t on my radar. However, my wife was dealing with dental issues and, after extensive research, opted for zirconia implants over the more common titanium ones due to her need to replace problematic root canals. Inspired by the documentary Root Cause, we chose a biological dentist for her treatment. After consulting with Dr. Blodgett, we discovered cavitations and jawbone issues stemming from those old extractions. Three of the wisdom tooth sites had infections, which Dr. Blodgett expertly addressed. The team not only removed the bacteria but also used ozone treatment to eliminate any lingering infection.

The post-surgery care I received exceeded all expectations. The staff provided excellent follow-up, and Dr. Blodgett gave me a detailed healing plan that included innovative therapies like red light therapy, vitamin C IV, and pulsed electromagnetic therapy. As someone new to biological dentistry, I was thoroughly impressed by Dr. Blodgett’s expertise and the compassionate, thoughtful care from everyone at the office.

Since the procedure, I’ve noticed a significant improvement in how I feel—more alert and less fatigued. If you’re facing dental issues, I wholeheartedly recommend Blodgett Dental Care. Their biological dental approach is truly exceptional

Biological Dental Care FAQs

What’s the difference between regular dentistry and biological dentistry?

Traditional dentistry focuses primarily on treating symptoms while biological dentistry strives to optimize health systems. Biological dentistry considers more than just teeth, gums, and jawbones—it considers energetic interferences, gut health, nutritional absorption, biocompatibility, and many other whole-body connections.

What does a biological dentist do instead of a root canal?

A truly biological dentist starts by asking questions rather than immediately giving answers. Each person has different health goals, budgets, and timelines. If a tooth is dead or in severe, non-treatable pain, the primary option to consider instead of a root canal is tooth removal. Once the dead tooth has been removed and the bone restored to health, you can consider replacement options. The most common biologically compatible option is a ceramic dental implant with a ceramic crown, though ceramic bridges or non-metallic removable partial dentures are also options.

What is the biological approach in dentistry?

The biological approach stems from the perspective that everything happening in your mouth impacts every other part of your body. First, it focuses on optimizing health so diseases never start. If you’ve experienced common dental diseases or treatments, biological dentistry aims to remove all substances not in harmony with whole-body health. Common toxic dental materials include mercury and nickel. Treatments that may negatively impact health include mercury amalgam fillings, root canals, fluoride treatments, and titanium metal implants.

Are biological dentists more expensive?

Every private dental practice is unique, reflecting the clinical knowledge and experience of its dentist. Some practices charge more than others, and the value patients receive at a higher investment may be worth the higher fee. Prices vary by state and region. Some biological dentists may charge more due to specialized materials, personalized testing, and longer appointment times. Some offer conservative treatment plans, potentially lowering long-term costs. Others use more expensive biocompatible materials and procedures, resulting in higher initial costs. The value gained with a biological dentist focusing on whole-body health usually far exceeds the minimal-quality care many experience in insurance-driven traditional care.

What do biological dentists use for fillings?

The first consideration is whether a filling is necessary at all. In many situations, remineralizing strategies can help teeth heal themselves—the very best dentistry is having no dentistry at all. However, if teeth become infected or injured, dental materials are required for restoration. Biological dentists considering your unique bio-individual health first obtain a BioComp test to ensure materials being implanted are compatible with your immune system. Once accomplished, the appropriate ceramic or composite material is chosen. Both dental ceramics and composites are tooth-colored, bondable materials that are beautiful, strong, and help restore teeth back to their original healthful integrity.

Do biological dentists use fluoride?

Fluoride has numerous biological effects, some beneficial and some highly toxic. When fluoride contacts tooth enamel, it creates fluorapatite, which is significantly more resistant to acid breakdown. However, when fluoride is absorbed into the bloodstream through ingestion or oral mucosa absorption, studies have proven it has a neurotoxic impact, specifically lowering IQ. Because of these risks, many biological dental practices choose not to use fluoride. Instead, they focus on optimizing the oral microbiome, improving nutrition quality, and removing all toxic substances in the mouth to facilitate whole-body health.

What is a biological tooth replacement?

When toxic teeth are removed, there are several biologically compatible replacement methods. The most tooth-like approach is replacing them with a ceramic (zirconia) implant and ceramic crown. This option looks, feels, and acts most like a real tooth while being compatible with your energy meridians and immune system. You can brush and floss it as though it were your own tooth. Other options include all-ceramic bridges or non-metallic removable partial dentures. However, you cannot floss a dental bridge like normal teeth, and you cannot chew with a removable partial denture like a normal tooth.

What is the hardest field in dentistry?

The most challenging field in dentistry is likely the one going against traditional dental dogma. Currently, these approaches include biological and holistic approaches to oral health. The majority of dentists and their respective dental organizations treat the mouth as though it’s not intimately connected to the rest of the body. Getting practitioners to become open to new thought processes such as leaning away from root canals, crowns, and metal fillings and implants takes time. The good news is that more scientific evidence is emerging about which materials and techniques create patient risk. As time passes, the hope is that growing numbers of dental professionals will consider updating their approaches to treatments compatible with each patient’s unique biology and energy.

Do you need a biology degree for dental school?

Although a biology degree isn’t necessary to become a dentist, it’s one of the core courses all healthcare providers take to gain entrance into health-associated programs. Core courses required for most health professions include biology, organic and inorganic chemistry, physics, biochemistry, and microbiology. One unique aspect of some biological dentists is pursuing additional education in fields like psychology with specific focus on counseling, providing understanding of human behavior and motivational style of interpersonal engagement that makes patient experiences uniquely positive.

Is biomimetic dentistry better?

Biomimetic dentistry is an approach that respects the anatomy of all oral tissues. Most traditional dentists are comfortable grinding down teeth to little nubs for crowns with little thought given to whole-body health consequences that may follow. Approaching dentistry from a biomimetic perspective means the dentist attempts to preserve all healthy tooth structure, gums, and jawbones. When restorative techniques are used, different materials reflect and mimic how natural teeth are designed in two distinctly different layers. A biomimetic approach is typically much more conservative and health-promoting than the traditional drill, fill, and bill style of care.
