What is Naturopathic Dentistry?
Naturopathic dentistry combines the principles of natural medicine with advanced, science-based dental care. At BDC, we believe your mouth is an integral part of your body. We see the truth – that every part of your body is connected to every other part. All things work in synergy and harmony.
Naturopathic dentistry stems from the perspective that everything that happens in your mouth impacts every other part of your body. First, it focuses on optimizing health so that states of disease never start.
Unlike conventional dentistry that treats the mouth like it is disconnected from the rest of the body, naturopathic dentistry recognizes that what happens in your mouth can impact your energy, immunity, and long-term wellness. If you have experienced common dental diseases or treatments, naturopathic dentistry aims to remove all substances that are not in harmony with whole body health.
We focus on the optimization of your oral microbiome, improving the quality of your nutrition, and removing all toxic substances in your mouth to facilitate whole body health.

Seriously the best dental experience I have ever had. I traveled from Indiana to have an inlay replaced after my previous dentist told me my only option was to replace it with a crown, and he also suggested 4 additional fillings.
Not only did Dr. Blodgett and his staff replace my inlay, they did it in one visit and made it look and feel better than it ever did before. He also saw no need for the 4 additional fillings, which was a huge relief.
The staff were amazing and made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire process. 100% worth traveling to Portland and paying out of pocket. Thank you Blodgett Dental Care!

Dr. Blodgett and his team are at the top of their game. I have seen several dentists over the years but Dr. Blodgett skillfully combines the most careful, least invasive interventions, innovative technology, hospitable and considerate staff with an easy going style that makes going to the dentist as enjoyable as possible. Dr. Blodgett has worked with me for almost a decade and I am grateful to have had his insight and skill as he has helped me fix some dental work that was causing pain, malocclusion and other health problems. I wrote this for anyone who may have been traumatized by dentists in the past, because Dr. Blodgett helped me to recover from negative experiences with dentists and improve my overall health. Having someone who will really listen to you is one of the most important things in healthcare, and Dr. Blodgett and his team do that.

Dr. Blodgett and his entire staff are wonderful. They took great care of me! It was the best dental experience I have ever had from start to finish and it is because of how cared for I felt. Dr. Blodgett, I hope I don’t need your services again or at least not for a VERY long time, but I know if I do I will be in the best hands possible.
Thanks again, Dr. Blodgett and staff!

Why do holistic and naturopathic dentists not do root canals?
Millions of people suffer from chronic tooth and jawbone infections. Recent studies have shown that all root canal treated teeth are loaded with microbes. When a diseased tooth is kept in living jawbone, the bone around the tooth changes its biological quality to one that is also diseased. Changes seen on dental X-rays include abscesses and “condensing osteitis”. Condensing osteitis is one of the ways that your body strives to protect its more vital organs from the chronic infection to which your jawbone is exposed. Truly holistic and naturopathic dentists understand that by leaving a dead tooth in living bone, this leads to jawbone diseases and energetic disruption of that dental meridian.
How do I take care of my teeth holistically?
A holistic approach to teeth is based on the understanding that they are each individual organ systems living within a larger system – the human body. A holistic dental approach considers that what happens to one system in the body affects all the others. For instance, a person who is under significant stress is much more likely to develop tooth decay than one who is relaxed. When under stress, your “fight or flight” response is activated, causing the fluid within your teeth to move inward rather than outward, allowing acids and microbes from the mouth to enter the porous root structure and cause breakdown. The holistic approach respects that everything affects everything else – from your mindset to your diet to your physical activity.
What do holistic dentists use to fill cavities?
The first consideration of a holistic dentist is whether a filling is necessary in the first place. In many situations it may be possible to use remineralizing strategies to help teeth heal themselves. Our opinion is that the very best dentistry is having no dentistry at all! However, if teeth have become either infected or injured, then dental materials will be required to restore the tooth back to health. Holistic dentists who are truly considering your own unique bio-individual health will first obtain a “BioComp” test to ensure that the materials being implanted in your mouth are compatible with your immune system. Once this has been accomplished, the appropriate ceramic or composite material will be chosen. Both dental ceramics and composites are tooth-colored, bondable materials that are beautiful, strong, and help restore teeth back to their original state of healthful integrity.
Do naturopathic dentists use fluoride?
Fluoride has numerous effects, some beneficial and some highly toxic. When fluoride contacts tooth enamel, it creates fluorapatite, which is significantly more resistant to acid breakdown. However, when fluoride is absorbed into the bloodstream through ingestion or oral mucosa absorption, studies have proven it has a neurotoxic impact, specifically lowering IQ. Because of these risks, many naturopathic and holistic dental practices choose not to use fluoride. Instead, they focus on optimizing the oral microbiome, improving nutrition quality, and removing all toxic substances in the mouth to facilitate whole-body health.
What is the safest alternative to a root canal?
A truly holistic or naturopathic dentist will start by asking you questions rather than immediately giving you answers. Each person is different – different health goals, different budgets, and different timelines. If a tooth is either dead or in severe, non-treatable pain, then something must be done in order to improve the health of the host. The primary option to consider instead of a root canal is to remove the tooth. Once the dead and/or painful tooth has been removed and the bone restored to health, then you can consider tooth replacement options. The most common biologically compatible option would be a ceramic dental implant with a ceramic crown. However, you may also consider replacing the missing tooth using a ceramic bridge or non-metallic removable partial denture.
