The Solution Is Not A Root Canal: Teeth After Fillings

Ever had a tooth that felt fine until AFTER a new filling? The solution is NOT a root canal!
Every week I meet new people who share the same story. They had teeth that felt fine until AFTER receiving dental fillings. Why, might you wonder? Today I will explain WHY most teeth become sensitive. Later, I will share how we restore teeth so it is nearly impossible to have sensitivity after treatment!
Let’s first talk about dental anatomy. Teeth are built in 3 layers:
– Enamel (the super-hard outer surface that you see when people smile)
– Dentin (the inner more collagen-rich layer that is full of millions of tubules)
– Pulp (a mixture of nerves, blood, and lymph vessels that give nutrients and allow sensation to the tooth organ).
Enamel is highly mineral rich and holds very little moisture. The dentin is made of significantly more collagen and is filled with moisture called “dentinal fluid”. Herein lies the problem with modern dental bonded fillings. No composite filling material bonds really well to both DRY (enamel) and MOIST (dentin) tissues. Yet this is exactly what most dentists do!
Almost all dentists use only one material – “composite resin” – to fill holes in teeth. But resins don’t stick well to moist surfaces! And to make matters worse, composite resin fillings shrink by 3% when cured. This creates the perfect recipe for developing tooth sensitivity!
Unfortunately, if you tell your dentist that your tooth hurts after the new filling is placed they will likely say, “I think you need a root canal.” Do NOT rush into getting a root canal! There are ways to bring your tooth back to health without giving your tooth a lobotomy!
